Prevent Dryer Vent Buildup

5 Ways to Prevent Buildup In a Dryer Vent
Written 12/27/23 by Ron West, Owner, Dryer Vent Wizard of Mission Viejo

What’s the big deal about a dryer vent? Preventing dryer vent obstructions is essential for the efficient operation of your dryer and, more importantly, for fire safety. Here are five ways to help prevent buildup in a dryer vent:

Regular Cleaning:
Schedule regular cleaning of your dryer vent at least once a year or more frequently if you notice any signs of reduced airflow. This should be done by a professional service provider like Dryer Vent Wizard

Clean the Lint Screen:
Clean the lint trap or filter after every load of laundry. This is a simple but effective step to prevent lint from accumulating in the vent system. A clogged lint trap can lead to lint passing into the vent. Remember, the lint screen only catches about 60% of the airborne lint from your laundry.

Inspect and Clean the Vent Hose:
Regularly inspect the vent hose (the flexible tube connecting the dryer to the wall) for any kinks, bends, or restrictions. Make sure the hose is securely connected and not crushed. Disconnect the hose and clean it thoroughly to remove accumulated lint. Foil-type hoses are fragile and flammable. All vent hoses should be replaced every 5 years.

Use a Shorter Vent Hose:
Whenever possible, use the shortest and straightest vent hose configuration. Longer, convoluted vent hoses are more prone to lint buildup, reducing airflow efficiency. Keep the vent hose as short and straight as possible, minimizing bends and turns.

Install a Vent Cover or Bird Guard:
Install a vent cover or bird guard on the exterior vent opening to prevent debris, birds, or rodents from entering the vent. However, make sure the cover does not restrict airflow. Clean the cover regularly to ensure it remains free of obstructions. Cross-hatched patterns for an exterior cover are not code compliant. See your Dryer Vent wizard for approved termination covers.

Remember that a clean and unobstructed dryer vent not only improves the efficiency of your dryer but also reduces the risk of fire hazards associated with lint buildup. If you're unsure about any aspect of your dryer vent maintenance, consult Dryer Vent Wizard for a thorough inspection and cleaning.
